We had a rough morning last week. When went out to check on the chickies we found that the door hadn't been properly latched. A wiley raccoon or 4 took that opportunity to eat some of our girls. There were many tears. Nine in all were taken. Two of our fastest and hardest to catch somehow made it. We thought that only two had survived when we heard a peeping from behind the trash can. There was Goldie. Now we have three survivors. Fluffy(Ruby), Goldie, and Maple. I swear they changed after that. They let me catch them and they like to perch on me when we take them out to the garden. Everyone talks about how stupid chickens are, but I wonder how true that really is.
Katie is having a hard time with the loss of Isabella. And Bertie our most friendly and curious bird is missed dearly too. We are now trying to figure out how to replace them. It's late in the season to get chicks and grown birds might pick on our little ladies. There is a swap meet in a couple of weeks that I am going to check out. I have never been to one and have no idea what to expect. My fingers are crossed.
So now we lock the coop every time we leave. Even if it's just for a moment. I'm sure that this won't be our last loss. We still have lots to learn. But, hopefully we won't make the same mistake twice.
Sorry to read about you loosing your chickie-girls. I'm pleased to see that they were recognized as individuals with their own personalities. Most people never care to take the time to get to know their animals ~ and the fact that they all do have emotions, intelligence and are aware of self.
I've been following your blog in silence for several months now and just wanted to tell you that you are doing a remarkable job with it! I enjoy it immensely and wish I had some of your talents....(esp. your cooking skills!!!!) ;-) Keep up the good work & God bless all in your world.
